Sharon Grossman and colleagues from the Sabeti lab designed computational tools to pinpoint causal variants in regions of positive selection in the human genome. Read their paper in Science, and a discussion of the findings in the Harvard Gazette.

Bauer Fellow Marcus Kronforst and his collaborators describe in the November 6 issue ofScience how they caught a very early stage of speciation in Heliconius butterflies; see also the discussion of this work in the Harvard Gazette, and an audio slide show at the National Science Foundation.

Bauer Fellow Peter Turnbaugh and his collaborators use mice with a humanized gut microbiome to study the effects of different diets on the microbiome. Their results are published in Science Translational Medicine. The work is also discussed in the NPR story "The gut response to what we eat".

The FAS Center for Systems Biology is an interdepartmental initiative at Harvard University

Our overall goal is to combine a variety of experimental and theoretical approaches to find general principles that help to explain the structure, behavior and evolution of cells and organisms. Our faculty and Fellows span a wide range of disciplines, including biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. We are the home of the Bauer Fellows program, the Bauer Core facilities, and faculty belonging to departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. We are part of a university-wide initiative in systems biology, which also comprises the PhD program in Systems Biology and the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. All elements of the Harvard Systems Biology community can be reached through a common portal.
